How an online game can help work on your creativity without feeling like work.

Among Us is an online multiplayer game that came out in 2018 and has recently grown in popularity over the past couple of months. The game presents players with a multitude of creative choices from character design to specifics of gameplay, such as speed, meeting lengths, number of tasks, etc. Some choices, like character colors, character accessories, and player names don’t affect the actual gameplay very much, but allow you the opportunity to personalize your character as you go into these multiplayer games. Other choices, like number of imposters, number of tasks, and player speed, can make a sizable difference in strategy and gameplay. 

During gameplay players can run wherever they want within the map. If a player is randomly selected as crewmate, they may complete tasks in any order to fill the task-bar and win the game. If a player is randomly selected as an imposter, they can kill any of the crewmates and sabotage their tasks. Players may report a killing or call an emergency meeting to vote off the players who they suspect might be imposters. The simplicity of the game allows players to hone in on strategy and creativity to win the game. Crewmates might stay in groups to avoid getting killed. Imposters might fake tasks to avoid being suspected. There are countless courses of action to take and each round played is different. 

Linkedin lists creativity as the most important soft skill to have in 2020. They define a soft skill as “essential interpersonal skills that make or break our ability to get things done.” Creative is a broad term. When most people think of a person who is “creative,” they think of painters, musicians, designers, filmmakers and other artistic professions. In reality, most professions require some sort of creative element, which is why it is deemed such an important career skill. Some people don’t think of themselves as creatively inclined, and hesitate to take on art related hobbies to sharpen their creative skills. Games, like Among Us, give players an opportunity to work on their creativity in a setting that doesn’t feel forced. When I play Among Us, I play to have a fun time with friends or strangers on the internet. It feels satisfying to win a round, especially when my strategies were a major component of the team’s win. The game is available on a wide variety of platforms and the rounds tend to be 10 minutes or less, so there are little barriers for participation as long as you own one of these platforms.
